Some of y ou may remember I had an overheat last month. I sent the oil out for analysis and it looks like there’s no clear signs of damage. I discussed it further with them via email and we determined that the high sodium was due to the brand of oil I used and not from any coolant intrusion.

The silicone should be fine with my next sample, I had an intake leak that was fixed partway through this oil cycle.

The nerd-part of me loves seeing these kind of oil analysis schema’s, while the cost-efficient mechanic part of me thinks it’s being way too anal about ones car/oil condition and maintenance...

how much does a test like this cost? How much oil do you send them? Do you use one of those glass vial coolers to ship it? Does john mcclane try to intercept?

In my case it was necessary this time because I needed to see if the overheat  had damaged the engine in any way

It’s $28 for this lab, you send them about 3oz, and they send you a special triple sealed container to mail it in, and as far as I know John McClane has no part in the process.

This lab costs a bit more than other ones but you get a personalized writeup out of it.

This is only the second  time I've done it, but I intend to do it with every oil change from now on. My engine has super high miles so it's important to keep an eye on bearing and piston wear.
